Instrument lessons

When are they held?

Lessons are held weekly, between midday and 3pm, and last for 30 minutes. For a limited number of instruments lessons may be before or after school.

When do they start?

Lessons for continuing students generally start on the Tuesday of week 2, after Active Citizenship Week has finished. New students will begin as soon as possible after week 2 each year. Students will be notified by their tutors of the commencement date and time for lessons.

How to Enrol for Instrument Lessons

To begin lessons for the first time on piano, recorder, or a string, woodwind, brass or percussion instrument, you will need to complete a pink Lesson Application form and return it to Ms Murphy's pigeonhole or hand it in at the Information Evening, so we can organise the required number of tutors. New students will be informed of their lesson day and time shortly after this date. Late forms will always be accepted, but students may miss out on preferred places.

Continuing students, and new ensemble members who do not learn through our program, must return the appropriate form which will be issued at an ensemble rehearsal once the rolls are set.

Why Not Kindergarten?
Our program is open to students from Y1 to Y6. By Y1, students are familiar with the school and its routines. They are more mature and their concentration span has improved enough to cope with the length of a timetabled instrument lesson. They are independent enough to manage instrument lesson times and to cope with time out of class. It can be helpful that by Y1, students understand the 'decoding' process involved in reading, which can then be applied to reading music. The school teaching staff feels it is preferable that the kindergarten year be focussed in the classroom.
